Endoscopes used in upper (GI) endoscopy, also called esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD, use a thin scope with a light source and camera at its tip to look inside of the upper digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. Biopsy and/or surgical instruments are added if necessary.
