Surgical Scrubs

The purpose of the surgical hand scrub is to reduce resident and transient skin flora to a minimum. Microorganisms that usually occupy a particular body site are resident flora. Microorganisms that colonize the host for hours to weeks but do not establish themselves permanently are transient flora. Transient flora often is the result of organisms present in the healthcare setting and is usually acquired by direct contact. However, both resident and transient floras are removed by the scrubbing procedure and growth is inhibited by the antiseptic action of the scrub used.
