A common gas used for sterilization in healthcare is ethylene oxide (EtO) gas. Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a flammable, colorless gas at temperatures above 51.3 ºF (10.7 ºC) that smells like ether at toxic levels. It is used to sterilize heat-sensitive medical devices. Most occupational exposures to EtO are covered by Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
